Project Overview

Project Objective

To develop a dynamic test system for evaluating military-type helicopter generators and starters under realistic mounted conditions. The system analyzes mechanical and electrical outputs to support development, maintenance, and repair activities.

Target Platform and Industry

  • Industry: Military/civil aviation, defense sector

  • Platform: Military and civilian helicopters

Scope and Functionality

The I-Level Test Equipment Project is designed to support intermediate-level maintenance operations for complex avionics systems—primarily the ACMI POD (Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation) used in military aviation.

What Does It Do?

  • Measures mechanical/electrical performance of helicopter generators and starters.

  • Tests generators by driving them mechanically and analyzing electrical outputs.
  • Tests starters by driving them electrically and analyzing mechanical outputs (e.g., torque, angular speed).

Technical Specifications

System Capabilities

  • Simultaneously tests two generators.

  • Supports hydraulic- and air-cooled generators (AC/DC).
  • 160 kW power unit drives generators up to 20,000 RPM.
  • Measures starter torque (up to 100 Nm) and angular speed (up to 20,000 RPM).
  • Fully automated PC-based controller for tests without manual intervention.
  • Modular design for compatibility with diverse mechanical interfaces.
  • Includes:
  • 2 AC + 2 DC load banks for generator load simulation.
  • 2000 A 28 V DC power supply for starter “no-load speed/torque” tests.
  • Electromechanical infrastructure for automated starter tests.
  • Capability to test/simulate Generator Control Units (GCU) and voltage regulators.
